Background of the Study
Trade unions play a crucial role in shaping healthcare workforce policies by advocating for better working conditions, fair remuneration, job security, and professional development opportunities for medical practitioners (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). In Nigeria, trade unions such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have been at the forefront of labor negotiations, ensuring that healthcare workers’ rights and welfare are protected (Federal Ministry of Health, 2024).
Kano State, one of Nigeria’s most populous regions, has a high demand for healthcare services, making the role of trade unions even more significant. However, despite their efforts, healthcare workers in the state continue to face challenges such as salary delays, poor working conditions, and inadequate staffing in medical facilities (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). These issues have led to frequent industrial actions, negatively impacting healthcare service delivery and patient outcomes (Ibrahim & Bello, 2024).
This study investigates the role of trade unions in influencing healthcare workforce policies in Kano State, focusing on their contributions, challenges, and overall impact on the healthcare sector.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the active presence of trade unions in Kano State, healthcare workforce policies remain inadequate in addressing critical issues such as fair wages, workplace safety, and career progression (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). The recurrent strikes and industrial disputes indicate gaps in policy implementation, affecting both healthcare workers and patients (Ogunbanjo & Salami, 2024).
There is limited research on how effectively trade unions influence workforce policies and whether their advocacy efforts lead to long-term improvements in the healthcare sector. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of trade unions in shaping healthcare workforce policies in Kano State and explore possible policy improvements.
